ABSTRACT. The use of iodized salt among various groups of the population over 10 years old, living in Ufa under conditions of moderate natural iodine deficiency, was studied. Commitment to mass and group iodine prophylaxis was estimated among pregnant women, health care workers and pensioners. The best motivation for preventive measures was identified among health care workers. Among pregnant women as a risk group for iodine deficient disorders (IDD), the awareness and motivation was low. Children born from women taking and not taking 200 mg/day of potassium iodide during pregnancy were examined (neonatal TSH level, Apgar score, thyroid ultrasonography, intellectual and psychological status). Low quality of mass prevention of iodine deficiency with the use of iodized salt among the population of Ufa was revealed. The use of individual and group iodine prophylaxis with 200 mg/day of potassium iodide among risk groups (pregnant women throughout the gestational age) does not completely eliminate manifestations of iodine deficiency, but considerably reduce them.
