ABSTRACT. Proteins of the S100 family, which play an important role in the regulation of many cellular processes, are intensively studied as markers of ischemic damage to the brain. Their ability to bind metal ions (Ca2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Mg2+, Mn2+) makes them important participants in the metal-ligand homeostasis, which is the central element in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke. The study confirmed the differences in the elemental composition and concentration of S100 proteins at patients with ischemic stroke and healthy volunteers, so justifies their possible use as diagnostic biomarkers for stroke. In addition, a statistically significant correlation between the concentration of S100 proteins and trace elements was found to suggest their synergistic participation in the multifactorial etiopathogenesis of ischemic stroke, which must be taken into consideration both in the diagnosis of discirculatory diseases and in the development of preventive and therapeutic strategies.
