ABSTRACT.
Tyumen Oblast comprises two of the largest okrugs by area and economically most important (oil and gas production): the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug (KhMAO, with the capital Khanty-Mansiysk and the largest, Surgut) and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YNAO, with the capital Salekhard). The cities we studied are located at different latitudes: Salekhard is at 66° north, Surgut and Khanty-Mansiysk are at 61° north, and Tyumen is at 57° north. These cities have different climates: relatively favorable in Tyumen, acceptable in Khanty-Mansiysk and Surgut, and extreme in Salekhard. Prolonged exposure to cold causes acclimatization deficiency and increases the need for trace elements with antioxidant activity: Mg, Cu, Zn, and Se, among residents of high latitudes.
Objective: Objective – to study the contents the magnesium, copper, zinc, and selenium in the hair of working-age residents of Salekhard, Khanty-Mansiysk, Surgut, and Tyumen.
Materials and methods.
A total of 150 non-residents of working age with more than 10 years of experience in the North were examined: 50 in Salekhard and Tyumen, 25 in Surgut and Khanty-Mansiysk, and 50 men and 100 women (38,9 ± 9,8 years). The ICP-MS method was used to determine the hair magnesium, copper, zinc, and selenium levels at the Central Medical Research Center.
Results.
Hair concentrations of Mg, Cu, Zn, and Se in the examined working-age individuals were closer to the lower limit of normal in all cities, with significantly higher values between Salekhard, located on the Arctic Circle, and Surgut and Khanty-Mansiysk, located further south, and especially Tyumen (p=0,048–0,0007).
Conclusion.
Increasing dietary Mg, Cu, Zn, and Se concentrations, combined with their intake as dietary supple-ments, is the best way to prevent metabolic disorders associated with their deficiency.
